Euro "Xmas" Millions comes early this Friday!
Was a bit slow after last weeks draw, did not realise the mega jackpot on offer until I got in to work late (oops) Monday morning.
Yet still could not find any info as to why the Euromillions lottery jackpot had suddenly jumped to a rather yummy looking $88 million.
That said Camelot were a bit slack, only putting this out on the 25th of this month:
88 Days to Xmas!
Even though I am a confirmed Atheist, I will still be buying my dream ticket, why don't you: play euromillions too

EuroMillions manyana (Well Friday actually)
Manyana - that's one of my nicknames, been on holiday (South of France) and want to retire there one day, maybe an Euromillions lotto win will get me there sooner...
And the Med way of life led me down my usual path of procrastination, so this post is my first in a while and with an £18 millions pound jackpot this week, maybe it could be my last if I win, coz then it's back to the Med for me :)

It's the EuroMillions Lottery and not the PlayEuro Lottery!
So I left my ticket at the office and was happy to see over the weekend that the Euromillions jackpot had been won, turned out it wasn't by me, although the number 13 was drawn!!!!
Some time ago had a guy who thought he had won the Euro Millions lotto, but as per usual it was a scam, the following is from my live support chat with him:

BBLSupport: ok, well must be a different type of scam, and anyway all legitimate lottos operate on the basis that it's the players responsibility to check their winnings numbers
HW: They want me to come to Amsterdam collect me from the airport in order to finalize the pay out what risk is there. Other than Identity Theft?

HW: BBLSupport,, I have not purchased any Online tickets but my London contact has. At first a Mrs Rosemary Q Smith of Barclays Bank Transit Department contacted me recently out of the blue that this win-money is sitting in their Transit Account. Then it was handed by them to the Interbank London. But the Initiator with whom I am supposed to share the winnings suggested that it is best handled by Premium Trust Finance Securities in Amsterdam. Now I am not sure how to proceed. I wrote and told the person in Amsterdam that I am not satisfied with the letter he sent me which suggests that I must bring my valid passport or Drivers Licence and pay 8,785.00 Euros for Administrative/Transfer charges. I wrote back to him and said to let me know when the fees have been paid by the London partner. also wrote to London and requested that he pays the fees as originally agreed and to let me know when he has done so. That was early this morning NZ time. I've just checked my email and there is no reply as yet. That's where it stands at present
BBLSupport: if you won't listen to me, then listen to your wife, you have just repeated what i'm telling you - out of the blue suggests unsolicited (do you actually know this person) and then secondly he asks you to pay admin charges - as i said in the beginning - advanced fee fraud
HW: The London person contacted me to say hew had a business proposal and then later proceeded to tell me what he had in mind. He personally could only work in the background and needed a person outside of Europe but he had a system worked out that could ensure us a sizeable win that we would share and he would take care of all the fees involved.

This is true I have never had any criminal record. That's sc ary nevertheless to hear that any-one can check out details about any-one else And then can you believe this morning our local National Radio had a talk and said that you can find it on GOOGLE. I checked and found nothing on me. I also checked on my wife and there is nothing listed however my daughter is an Optomotrist and it gave her professional details and where she works. My son was listed as a volontary Fireman. And his wife (who uses her English maiden name) does some voluntary work for a church and there it gave her home number
HW: BBLSupport thank yo ufor your time and I will heed your advice and not fly to Europe unless these guys come up with some real concrete evidence which I asked thenm for all along.

Does that bode well for me or what?
Hoping so but did you know that it's only English, German and Portuguese speaking cultures who consider today a bad luck day. So is a winner going to be from France or Spain (Tuesday 13th a no no)?
I don't think so as I'm not superstitious (tempting fate) but will still be buying my lucky dip for tonight's Euro millions lotto draw! One can only live in hope (trying to do so with grace too).

In one of my earlier posts, how to play Euromillions I mentioned 2 considerations when choosing your Euro millions lottery numbers.
Knowing your odds means the only way to improve your odds is to buy more tickets. There are no other sure ways of increasing your chance of winning the Euromillions lottery jackpot.

Euro Millions Jackpot - £26 million or €39 million
Which do you prefer?
Well in this instance it looks like taking the Euros would be the way to go, as looking at today's exchange rate (XE.com), 26 millions pounds works out to around 38.38 millions euros, but that is only if you are concerned with winning a prize from one of the other tiers, 2 - 12.
Why is this?
Well the EuroMillions lottery is a pan-European lotto where all the memeber countries have their currency as €, except the UK who still uses the £.
This means that the exchange rate has an effect on the prize structure of the UK version, because each country runs it's own seperate EuroMillions game, but uses a shared prize pool and draw results.
A euro millions ticket is €2.00 and half of this goes to the central prize fund, however in the UK they are sold at £1.50 a ticket. So the exchange rate difference means a prize fund variation.
For example, Camelot would thus provide £0.75 to the prize fund, but if the rate was £0.65 : €1.00, then the contribution to the cenral fund would be 65 pence. The other £0.10 of Camelot's prize fund is paid out to UK euromillions winners of levels 2 - 12, and is allocated to each of those tiers in proportion to the total UK value of that tier.
The Euro millons jackpot is not altered and thus a UK winner will receive the same winnings as an European winner from one of the other countries.

Why the Euro millions Lottery?
Good question.
My love affair with lotteries began shortly after arriving in the UK for the second time in 1999 (The South African National Lottery had not yet begun). I bought my first UK National Lottery ticket with one thing in mind, the jackpot!
But this is why we all buy lotto tickets, most of us can't act like Robert de Niro nor sing like Jack White (The White Stripes – The hardest button to button - happened to be the next song on my playlist whilst posting this) and lottery jackpots are our ticket to the good life (a pipe dream but a dream nonetheless).
Needless to say I didn't win but a few tickets later was pleasantly surprised to have won a tenner. Months later I was close to a hundred up but then the odds caught up with me, and shortly after was in the red.
So I gave up!
Then in 2005, Dolores McNamara made headline news, after the Euro Millions lottery rolled over 9 times, to win the jackpot of $152 million. And the Euro Millions lottery is tax free! She still remains the biggest individual winner of the EuroMillions lotto although the highest euro millions jackpot of $241 million was reached when no-one won the 12th draw, and the jackpot was divided amongst the tickets matching the 5+1 prize.

How to play the Euro Millions lottery
And no, I'm not talking about filling out the playslip with your 5 main numbers and Lucky Stars.
I'm talking about maximising your chances to win the Euromillions jackpot. Now there are loads of pages on the web all trying to bamboozle people into using their system that will make you a lottery winner.
Really, spending 150 dollars on a lottery software programme is actually more stupid than blowing that same amount on say this week's Euromillions lottery draw (if you want to, click here: play euromillions online)
So what can you do? 2 things essentially:
1. Know your odds
The UK National Lotto odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 13,983,816, that is to say picking all 6 numbers correctly. This translates into roughly the same as flipping a coin and getting heads 24 times in a row.
Ok, so the Euro Millions Lotto odd are far worse, 1 in 76,275,360 of picking the jackpot numbers, but why do I prefer it? Well from matching 3 to 4 numbers in the UK Lotto, your odds shoot from 1 in 56 to 1 in 1031, whilst the Euro Millions Lotto offers 5 lower level tiers with odds that are less than the 1 in 1031. The highest of these 5 Euro Millions Lotto low level prizes will pay out roughly £25.00. This I add to my Euro Millions Lotto budget, and allows me to play more often (for the jackpot of course) without having to go over the lotto budget.
2. Be Random
We all have our favourite numbers and most use birthdays, anniversaries etc to help pick numbers - DON'T - everyone does and by being more random you will increase your chance of not having to share the Euro Millions Lotto jackpot with anyone, although it doesn't increase your chance of hitting the jackpot. A while back I was taking some euromillions playslips to our local newsagent and the daily news headline grabbed my attention: "Camelot proposes first ever World Lotto" or something along those lines.

Not Powerball, rather play Euro millions lottery
Do you agree or disagree?
My reasons:
1. Odds
Powerball jackpot odds are 1 in 146,107,962, whilst the euro millions lottery odds are 1 in 76,275,360. That is to say you are almost twice as likely to win the euromillions.
2. Prize structure
Euro millions lotto has 3 more prize levels and the payouts on these are based on percentage of prize fund, whilst Powerball are fixed prizes. Lowest prize for matching the Powerball is $3, whislt in the euro lottery the lowest level prize is on average around £7 that is to say around $14.
3. Euromillions is tax free
and Powerball is not. Take a look at this week's euro millions lottery draw and will see that if on Friday night your numbers come up then you are banking roughly $34,037,309.00. Whilst yesterday's Powerball jackpot of $103 millions was won. However the cash value is a lot less, looking at past winners for near the same amount and the win becomes $46 odd million. But that is not what you are banking, you still have to cough up Federal and State Income tax so you could end up with around half the cash sum in your pocket.
So it's $34 mill if you go with the euro millions lottery but only $23 mill if you play Powerball and your odds are twice as bad playing it!
So why do our customers keep playing Powerball? Looking at our customer purchases yesterday, there were TRIPLE the sales for Powerball compared to Euromillions.
Are we really all that greedy?

Why "The euro millions lottery aka euromillions"...
....and not the other way round?
Yes the official name of this pan-European lottery is "Euromillions", however for a long time now Google would always auto correct and ask if you meant your search term to be "euro millions"!!!
And thus this is the name of my blog! Although that said, today I stuck in the search term: 'euromillions lottery', and was hoping to be prompted again for a 3 word search: euro millions lottery. But not anymore, does this mean my blog is out of date? Oh well, I still found it amusing.

Euro millions lottery scams
Whilst having breakfast this morning, watched a segment on BBC news, which reported on the sudden increase in postal letter scams. In it the guy in question had replied to one and shortly after was receiving up to 30 such letters a day. To see more: Mail scams increase
Almost everyday I am asked by online customers to verifiy that the snailmail/email they received is genuine or not, such as the one below:
So if you receive a euro millions lottery winning notification (or any other lotto) remember 2 things:
1. UNSOLICITED EMAIL IS SPAM - regardless of what the subject maybe. If you receieved a letter/email from somone you do not know/never heard of/did not request then it is spam. You receive an invitation for cheap Viagra and you bin the letter, why not do the same for euro millions lotto scam letters?
2. IF IT SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, THEN IT PROBABLY IS - remember that it is the player's responsibilty to check and claim winnings. Think back to the last raffle you saw where a ticket was drawn and no one claimed. Bet you they didn't stop the game to go find the person, it would either be left as unclaimed or put back in for another drawing. So if in doubt,do some research first, for example this is from the T&Cs of the UK national lottery:

As email is our main form of communication we offer our customers an "opt-in" clause when signing up, which means we use permission based marketing and thus any email you receive unsolicited, purporting to be from us, is fraudulent. So bin it!!! Else you go on the fraudsters sucker list and then you will keep getting these lottery scams etc

Not the Euro Millions Lottery Results I wanted...
...nor the rugger result. Not a great day! SA lost to the All Blacks in the Tri-Nations Rugby and then, get home to see that my numbers didn't even come close to winning the euromillions lotto jackpot.

Normally go for a random number generator when picking my euro millons lottery tickets but for some reason going to try my old numbers: 13, 21, 23, 33 & 47 with Lucky Stars 03 and 09.
