Some time ago had a guy who thought he had won the Euro Millions lotto, but as per usual it was a scam, the following is from my live support chat with him:
BBLSupport: hi HW, how may i help?
HW: My name & email address appears on a PlayEuro Lottery ticket that has won me some money - how can I find out if this is true or just made up by some one. There is no number it just says "Lottery Players Results"
BBLSupport: it's made up
BBLSupport: a form of 'advanced fee fraud' - usual story is you need to pay certain fees before the winnings can be released
HW: Hello BBLSupport I should have said its a little docket and has the winning numbers shown in 5 lines and line # 5 shows 5 numbers
HW: No he has not asked me for any fees as he said he would pay any fees
BBLSupport: ok, well must be a different type of scam, and anyway all legitimate lottos operate on the basis that it's the players responsibility to check their winnings numbers
HW: They want me to come to Amsterdam collect me from the airport in order to finalize the pay out what risk is there. Other than Identity Theft?
BBLSupport: in other words you will never be contacted by a lotto to state you have won
BBLSupport: waste of your time?
BBLSupport: not sure but it's not true
BBLSupport: never heard of PlayEuro Lottery
HW: Yes he is syndicated with me, The Lotto did not contact me he just copied the PlayEuro docket that has these details listed including the the amount which he want to share with me 50 - 50
BBLSupport: so you were expecting this email?
HW: Yes I asked him to provide me with some evidence so that I could show it to my wife before I contemplate an expensive trip from New Zealand. OK so it's probably all a SCAM! So why do they want me to come to Amsterdam, I've actually spoken with the initiator in London on many occasions and the 3 times with the person in the Netherlands
BBLSupport: are you buying tickets online?
BBLSupport: what i am trying to establish is how this communication began? i'm going to assume he contacted you first and thus it is unsolicited. unsolicited email is called spam, if you received an email from an unknown person selling you cheap viagra you would bin it. the same applies for lottery winning notification emails - they are unsolicited and thus the only thing to do is bin it
HW: BBLSupport,, I have not purchased any Online tickets but my London contact has. At first a Mrs Rosemary Q Smith of Barclays Bank Transit Department contacted me recently out of the blue that this win-money is sitting in their Transit Account. Then it was handed by them to the Interbank London. But the Initiator with whom I am supposed to share the winnings suggested that it is best handled by Premium Trust Finance Securities in Amsterdam. Now I am not sure how to proceed. I wrote and told the person in Amsterdam that I am not satisfied with the letter he sent me which suggests that I must bring my valid passport or Drivers Licence and pay 8,785.00 Euros for Administrative/Transfer charges. I wrote back to him and said to let me know when the fees have been paid by the London partner. also wrote to London and requested that he pays the fees as originally agreed and to let me know when he has done so. That was early this morning NZ time. I've just checked my email and there is no reply as yet. That's where it stands at present
BBLSupport: if you won't listen to me, then listen to your wife, you have just repeated what i'm telling you - out of the blue suggests unsolicited (do you actually know this person) and then secondly he asks you to pay admin charges - as i said in the beginning - advanced fee fraud
HW: The London person contacted me to say hew had a business proposal and then later proceeded to tell me what he had in mind. He personally could only work in the background and needed a person outside of Europe but he had a system worked out that could ensure us a sizeable win that we would share and he would take care of all the fees involved.
HW: BBLSupport I told him right from the start that I would never go for any up-front fee
HW: scheme
BBLSupport: ok we are now going round in circles and i do have other jobs to take care of, as before i deal with this sort of query daily, however most have not made contact yet, unlike you, this is why it has progressed so far they are just baiting you
BBLSupport: do what you must but believe me you will be out of pocket at the end of all this, stop all communication, if you have supplied personal details i would go to the police station and report this
HW: Yes I am listening to you, I discussed it with my Lawyer this morning and showed him the PlayEuro docket he suggested that I should check it out on-line if these numbers are any where listed about 2 weeks ago now. That is why I am contacting you because like you said there is no such Lottery called PlayEuro.
BBLSupport: ok, im sorry if it sounded rude, i always feel like the harbinger of doom with these queries
BBLSupport: telling people they have not won but are being scammed
BBLSupport: always remember the adage: if it looks too good to be true, then it probably is!
BBLSupport: is there anything else i can help with?
HW: No I have not supplied any critical personal details, neither do I intend to. But he mentioned on the phone to me that he had me checked out and saw that I had a clean bill of health. This is true I have never had any criminal record. That's sc ary nevertheless to hear that any-one can check out details about any-one else And then can you believe this morning our local National Radio had a talk and said that you can find it on GOOGLE. I checked and found nothing on me. I also checked on my wife and there is nothing listed however my daughter is an Optomotrist and it gave her professional details and where she works. My son was listed as a volontary Fireman. And his wife (who uses her English maiden name) does some voluntary work for a church and there it gave her home number
HW: BBLSupport thank yo ufor your time and I will heed your advice and not fly to Europe unless these guys come up with some real concrete evidence which I asked thenm for all along.
HW: Please excuse my typing errors
BBLSupport: not to worry, and glad to help
HW: Have a good day are you in London and what is your weather like there at present. We are still enjoying a very good Indian Summer when it should have been already very cold. Cheers
BBLSupport: yes, im in london, weather is turning, been hot and sunny last few days but thunderstorms and showers are on the way, in other words typical english weather
BBLSupport: go well
HW: OK and thank you very much do you agree these guys are playing a clever game for what reason do the go on with me I don't understand?
BBLSupport: yes i have even received a winning notificaton email, they send 1000s and i hope only a few repsond, those that do will probably be suspicious to start so its a quesiton of building trust (albeit false)
HW: Other than that I promised that I would collect the money personally and therefore I made an Airline booking only, for this coming Sunday (have not paid) Was that cheeky of me? And can they do something to me having played them at their own game?
HW: Yes so far its only cost me my time and a few cheap phone calls to test if the numbers and person actually exist.
BBLSupport: yes but phone numbers are easy to come by and also to divert, if you stop communicating they will just go find some other fish to fry, as you said they have no details so i would not stress about it, anyway your lawyer knows about this too.
BBLSupport: going to have to cut this chat short i'm afraid, i have a meeting to get to
HW: Thank you BBLSupport, I've hogged enough of your time, you have put my mind at ease so that is something very worthwhile. Go well
BBLSupport: you too and good bye
HW: Ciao
